Choosing well

Dry, medium-dry, medium-sweet or sweet?

The difference between a dry, medium-dry, medium-sweet and sweet wine lies above all in the amount of residual sugar left in the wine after fermentation. In practice, the higher this level, the sweeter the wine tastes. For still wines, a wine is generally called dry up to 4 g/L, medium-dry up to 12 g/L, medium-sweet up to 45 g/L, and sweet above 45 g/L.

≤ 4 g/L

Dry

A clean, fresh and precise palate.

≤ 12 g/L

Medium-dry

Rounder and softer, while keeping its liveliness.

≤ 45 g/L

Medium-sweet

A pronounced sweetness, lifted by acidity.

> 45 g/L

Sweet

Rich, concentrated and very indulgent.

Up to 4 g/L

Dry wines

Dry wines contain very little or no residual sugar. They offer a clean, fresh, precise and often very thirst-quenching palate. These wines are particularly appreciated for their tension, their balance and their ability to accompany a meal with elegance.

Up to 12 g/L

Medium-dry wines

With a sweetness that is more noticeable than in a dry wine, they offer a rounder, softer profile, often more accessible to palates looking for a balance between fruit, suppleness and liveliness. The medium-dry category corresponds to a sugar content higher than that of dry wines, up to about 12 g/L, with some regulatory variations depending on the wine's acidity.

Up to 45 g/L

Medium-sweet wines

Medium-sweet wines stand out for their more pronounced sweetness. Their residual sugar content is higher, while remaining balanced when supported by good acidity. For still wines, the "moelleux" (medium-sweet) designation corresponds to a sugar content of up to 45 g/L.

Above 45 g/L

Sweet wines

Sweet Alsace wines are the richest in residual sugar. Above 45 g/L, the sensation of sweetness becomes more intense and enveloping. These wines generally offer great aromatic concentration, a full palate and a very indulgent expression.
